Implementing Technology in the Classroom Ashley Joe

Purpose The purpose of this presentation is to encourage teachers to use technology and to provide tips for ways to effectively implement technology.

Using Technology vs Integrating Technology Using Technology 1. Technology use is random and often an afterthought. 2. Technology is used purely just to use technology 3. Technology is used to present information. Integrating Technology 1. Technology usage is planned with a purpose. 2. Technology is used in support of curriculum and learning objectives. 3. Technology is used to construct and build knowledge (Rao, 2013).

Effect of Multimedia and Technology on Students O Multimedia activities help promote cooperative learning and team work. O Students will be able to take this skill into the work field. Planning cooperative activities that use computers as a collaborative tool helps to promote shared work. O Students are learning to be self-directed and independent. O Research activities online help students develop independence. Students using technology gain more confidence and depend less on their teachers as they begin to develop their own plan for knowledge (Eldakak, 2012).

Ways to Incorporate Multimedia in the Classroom O 1.) Create visual handouts. For example Screenshots is software that can be used to create visual handouts quickly. Another example is Jing software, which can be used to record video or screenshots. These video or screen shots can in turn be embedded on websites or ed directly to students. O 2.) Use videos to scaffold learning by having students watch and comment on a video as a pre reading assignment (Schroeder, 2010).

Ways to Incorporate Multimedia in the Classroom Blogs create community in the classroom and can be used four different ways 1.) Classroom news blogs work similar to the classroom website. 2.) Mirror blogs are used to post both teachers and students reflective thinking on a specific topic. 3.) Showcase blogs are used to showcase students achievements. 4.) Literature response blogs are used similarly to literature response journals. Teachers post a topic online and students respond (Zawilinski, 2009).

Ways to Integrate Technology In Science Some Multimedia tools specifically for science classrooms are: O Virtual Labs O Simulations O Models of scientific phenomenon ("Using multimedia tools," )

Useful Websites O (WebQuest maker) O (Learning community) O /staff.php?sectiondetailid=102671& (Virtual Labs) /staff.php?sectiondetailid=102671& O (Science Games) O (One of many pinterest sites for science teachers) O (Website creator) O Science 360 (Great iPad app that has video from different subject areas)

Available Technology at South Florence High School Video Cameras Video editing software Microphones Computer access via 2 computer labs and 6 laptop carts Classroom set of iPads and iPods Smart Systems Access to software such as Audacity to create podcast For additional information contact the school’s technology specialist. Additionally feel free to take advantage of the various technology training sessions throughout the year.
