Fiji Flag The current flag of Fiji was adopted on October 10, The union jack (upper left) is because of the country's time under British rule. The flag's blue background stands for the surrounding pacific ocean. The coat of arms display a golden British lion holding a cocoa pod, as well as panels with a palm tree, sugar cane, bananas and dove of peace.

History Once known as the Cannibal Isles. Before the 19 th century the Fijians were cannibals. Of course once Christianity spread, the practice was abandoned. They stick to fish now. Fiji is made up of 322 islands but only 110 are lived on. The Fiji islands were discovered in 1643 by Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer. In 1874 Fiji became a British Colony. It gained its independence in 1970.
