Electrolysis of copper chloride Electrolysis-Decomposition of an electrolyte by passage of an electric current through it is called ‘electrolysis’.. Electrolysis of copper chloride( CuCl2) Construction of electrolytic cell- Electrodes – carbon rods Electrolyte – copper chloride solution(2 g in 150 ml water ) Connect battery, bulb or ammeter and switch in circuit.

Electrolysis of copper chloride Procedure – Switch on the current in the circuit for 5 to 15 min and observe the changes at electrodes & colour of solution. Observations – i)Cathode-portion dipped in solution become reddish. ii) Anode- bubbles of gas are observed at anode. iii)The colour of copper chloride solution appears to fade out.

Classification of elements Conclusion- i)The reddish substance at cathode is copper. ii)The gas observed at anode is chlorine. iii) The colour fading of copper chloride solution shows that concentration of solution decreases

Electrolysis of copper chloride Reactions And expiation There are Cu2+ ions and Cl- ions in aqueous solution of copper chloride (CuCl2) When electric current is passed through the circuit i) Cu2+ ions are attracted towards cathode. There they accept the electrons and copper is deposited at cathode. Cu2+ +2e- →Cu (cathode reaction) ii)Cl- ions are attracted towards the anode .There they loose electrons and chlorine gas is evolved at anode. 2Cl- →Cl2 + 2e- ( Anode reaction ) iii) Thus in electrolysis of CuCl2 , Copper is deposited at cathode & chlorine gas is evolved at anode. Cu2+ + 2Cl- →Cu + Cl2 ( cell reaction)

Question:- Describe the electrolysis of copper chloride. THANK YOU.
