Given what you’ve learned about satire, Ireland in the 1720s, and Jonathan Swift, turn to page 199. Read the title and the subtitle. Journal: Predict what this story will be about given the information you have.

Today – Read through “A Modest Proposal” on page 199 and follow the guidelines on the notes page I’ve given you. Paraphrase the plot, learn information about the narrator, and find examples of satire. Take your time. If you finish in ten minutes, you will only have more to do. Again, take your time and be thorough. You need to understand this text. You will be tested on it.

ENG12 – October 30 th How would you describe the structure of “A Modest Proposal?” By structure I mean: How is it formatted/set-up? What does it read like? To help you – Think about how most fantasy novels are written compared to a “how-to” essay or an autobiography.

Journal: Think of an issue today that you feel is very important. It can be a local issue or a national concern. Then, think about the most drastic solution someone could propose in order to resolve this problem. In other words, brainstorm a topic for your own satirical essay.
