Research task 1 personal hygiene Teeth should be regularly cleaned and checked by a dentist. A daily bath or shower is important Always wear well fitted shoes Keep fingernails clean and well manicured Hair should always be well styled Make up should be worn in the salon Do not wear hanging chains or large rings Deodorant should be used everyday Salon wear should be well pressed and clean Shoes should be polished Male staff should be shaved or their facial hair regularly trimmed Feet need regular attention

Research task 3 salon evacuation When the fire alarm is sounded you should leave the salon immediately. You must leave the salon in a quiet manner. Never return to the building before the all clear has been given. You must meet at the assembly point by the field after you have left the building. Never stop to collect your bags or coats when the alarm has been sounded. Clients should be helped from the salon when the alarm has been sounded.

EQUIPTMENT: Brushes and combs – clean and sterilised Hairdryers – check the temperature test that they work don’t hold it to close to the head direct the head to the ends of the hair Rollers and pins – don’t pierce the scalp with the pins and the tension not to tight Straighteners – check before use make sure they are on correct setting MATERIALS: Rubber gloves – fit properly no holes in and clean Aprons – fastened correctly no holes and clean Gowns – clean dry and well maintained Shoulder capes – dry clean and fastened correctly

If needed ask for help.

Research task 7 first aid in the salon. IF A CLIENT OR STYLIST CUTS HIMSELF OR HERSELF DURING A TREATMENT WHAT RULES MUST BE FOLLOWED: Ask the client to add pressure to the wound. Ring first aid rep straight away. IF A CLIENT OR STYLIST SUFFERS AN ELECTRIC SHOCK, WHAT RULES MUST BE FOLLOWED: Do not touch the person. Switch off the electricity supply. Contact the fist aid rep immediately. All accidents must be reported in the accident book.

Research task 8 Infections INFECTIOUS CONDITIONS: Impetigo. Ringworm. Head lice. Cold sores. NON INFECTIOUS CONDITIONS: Split ends. Greasy hair. Dandruff. White hair. Psoriasis.

Research task 9 legislations which affect salons. The work place (health, safety and welfare) regulations 1992 Has taken the place of older laws. All at work must keep a safe healthy workplace. The personal protective equipment at work regulations 1992 Employers must provide suitable and enough protective clothing and equipment, they must provide it free of charge and they must provide training in its use. The provision and use of work equipment regulations 1992 Employers must select equipment that is properly made, suitable for the purpose and kept in good repair. The control of substances hazardous to health regulations 1992 (COSHH) This concerns the safe use, storage and disposal of all chemicals used in the hairdressing salon.

The electricity at work regulations 1989 Under this law the employer must supply and ensure all electrical equipment used in the salon is kept in a safe condition. It is the employees responsibility to report any problems or defects. Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations 1989 (RIDDOR) Under this law your salon must report any accidents diseases and dangerous occurrences that may happen at work in the salon. The manual handling operations regulations 1992 All at work must help prevent the risk from lifting and handling objects.
