6 Management must aggressively act to stop harassment, discrimination & retaliation Courts are starting to assess liability for supervisory/ management deficiencies in failing to correct problems that arise between employees Lack of Communication Demise of civility Failure to listen/hear Forgetting the “Golden Rule” applies to employees Creating perception of a lack of respect Failure of leadership/supervisory accountability Manager’s focus on mission outputs Ignoring the people issues until the problem is severe Viewed as tacit approval of action, making us vulnerable for significant liability We’re getting better but sensitivity still needed We must get serious— Management anti-discrimination training Timeliness in taking appropriate actions Holding mediocre and incompetent supervisors, managers, & resource providers accountable in a real way We cannot continue to rationalize a managers' conduct because a problem employee is a poor performer Or by saying, “That’s just [name of supervisor]”
