PROS AND CONS

Notebooks Entries Are: In pencil Labeled with the date Labeled with the entry number Labeled with a proper title Written very neatly Clearly legible Followed by a horizontal line to separate entries on a single page Written so as to maximize the use of each page Representative of the student’s best effort Complete

ENTRY 5 – Today’s Objective I will be exploring variables and expressions, I will simplify expressions by combining like terms, and will be writing algebraic expressions. HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? Quiz Friday with at least one of the problems from today on it EXACTLY AS IS HW tonight with 4 problems, at least 1 of which will also be on Friday’s quiz Chapter test where I will have to simplify elgebraic expressions

Notebooks Entries Are: In pencil Labeled with the date Labeled with the entry number Labeled with a proper title Written very neatly Clearly legible Followed by a horizontal line to separate entries on a single page Written so as to maximize the use of each page Representative of the student’s best effort Complete

How to Treat Tiles? Treat tile how you treat others, with respect. Tiles do not fly, therefore we shall not see them flying across the room. If a tile is on the floor pick it up! Keep them clean. Return as given. Keep tiles in classroom. Tiles are for learning they are not weapons, thus do not throw them to people.

DURING TEAM WORK… I work cooperatively with my team members to accomplish a particular goal by: Performing assigned tasks/roles Listening to my team members Respecting the ideas of others Being a helpful contributor to the team.

Entry 6 – Problem 2-1 Exploring Variables and Expressions Teacher will distribute a set of Algebra Tiles for your team to use during this course. As you explore the tile, address the following questions. Be prepare to share. How many different shapes are there? What are all of the different shapes? How are the shapes different ? How are they the same? How are the shapes related? Which fit together? Which do not?

DURING OPEN DISCUSSION… I contribute my ideas to class discussion. I listen to others when they are speaking. I wait for the appropriate time to contribute my ideas. I am polite in my interactions with other students and the teacher.

Notebooks Entries Are: In pencil Labeled with the date Labeled with the entry number Labeled with a proper title Written very neatly Clearly legible Followed by a horizontal line to separate entries on a single page Written so as to maximize the use of each page Representative of the student’s best effort Complete

Entry 7 – Problem 2-2 Draw a picture of each type of tile A. The algebra tile will be referred to by their areas. Since the smallest square has a length of 1 unit, its area is 1 square unit. Thus, the name for this tile is “one” or a “unit tile.” Label your drawing of this tile with its side lengths and area. B.Can you use the unit tile to find the other lengths? Why or why not?

DURING OPEN DISCUSSION… I contribute my ideas to class discussion. I listen to others when they are speaking. I wait for the appropriate time to contribute my ideas. I am polite in my interactions with other students and the teacher.

Problem 2-2 continue… C.If you cannot use the unit tile to measure all of the other side lengths of the other tiles, how can you label them so that you can find their area? Discuss this with your team and be prepared to share your ideas with the class. D.Label your drawings and then name the other tiles using their areas. Be sure to use what you know about the area of a rectangle and the are of a square

Entry 8 – Problem 2-13 “Combining like terms” Use the tiles to build the shape Sketch and label the shapes on your paper. Then write an expression that represents the perimeter. Simplify your perimeter expression as much as possible. This process of writing the expression more simplify by collecting together the parts of the expression that are the same is called combining like terms.

Problem 2-13 continue.. A. B. X 1 1Xy x 1 C. y2y2 x2x2 1

Entry 9: Homework Problems 2-6, 2-17 (Worksheet) Let’s look through them together to see if we have any questions before you work independently at home Remember your quiz Friday will be about 50% problems from your homework

END OF CLASS 3 minute warning from class leader Planner check by class leader (homework must be recorded for each class period today) SECURE YOUR GEAR Class, ATTENTION Dismissal by group

ENTRY 10 - STARTER 1. 3 / / / / / 1

Entry 11: Board Work I will place a problem on the board One person from each group at a time goes to the board, prints their name on the board, listens to the problem and copies it down and solves it Everyone else copies the problem onto their notebook as an entry Resource Manager Facilitator /Timer Recorder/Reporter Task Manager/Justifier

Board Work continue.. Y C. y2y2 x2x2 1 D. X Y YY Y X

Entry 12 – “USING AN EXPRESSION MAT” Your introduction to algebra tiles in Lesson and involved only positive values. Today you will look at how you can use algebra tiles to represent “minus.” Below are several tiles with their associated values. Note that the shaded tiles are positive and the un-shaded tiles are negative. The diagram at right will appear throughout the text as a reminder. = 5 = -3

Note that the shaded tiles are positive and the un-shaded tiles are negative. The diagram at right will appear throughout the text as a reminder. X X X = 3x y = -2y y y

Entry 13 – WORD WALL “Minus” can also be represented with a new tool called an Expression Mat, shown at right. An Expression Mat is an organizing tool that will be used to represent expressions. Notice that there is a positive region at the top and a negative (or “opposite”) region at the bottom

Entry 14- Problem 2-23 “USING AN EXPRESSION MAT” Using the Expression Mat, the value -3 can be shown in several ways, two of which are shown at right
