Swbat learn the right way to quote DO NOW NEWS WRAP: Take a newspaper from the front of the room and read an article. Underline/highlight the quotes

Types of Quotes Direct quotes: word-for-word replays of information from sources to provide insight into a story. May be full sentences or part of a sentence. Partial Quote is more than a word or two but less than a full sentence taken directly from the source. It is used with a paraphrase and placed in quotation marks.

Types of Quotes Fragmentary quote: is an exact word or two taken directly from the source and placed in quotation marks within a paraphrase. Use sparingly and only when their uses gives better insight into the story than the reader would gain from a paraphrase or full quote alone.

Do’s and Don’ts Can you reorganize the original comments to fit better with your story? NO Can you eliminate some words and insert an ellipsis (…) to show you omitted something? YES—but only if it really lengthy. Can you change minor grammar errors in a person’s quote—AP Stylebook says no. – You can edit out “umms, and ers” and correct only if it helps the reader understand

TOGETHER With a partner, you are going to ask them some questions to introduce them to the rest of the class. Find out something different/interesting about the person. – We are going to use this information to write a small story.
