Raccoon Home Range By: Garet Baader

Questions What is the home range of a raccoon? How far do raccoons travel? Does temperature affect raccoon movement? What habitats do raccoons prefer? Do raccoon territories overlap?

Introduction Two male raccoons were radio collared Radio Telemetry was used to track them Raccoon home ranges were determined using ArcView and Animal Movement Analysis Territorial habits were analyzed using collected data

Radio Telemetry Equipment Antenna is used to pick up Radio signals.

Radio Telemetry Equipment Receiver is to show how strong or weak the signal is. Also shows how far away the animal Is.

Radio Telemetry Equipment GPS is used to track your coordinates and allows you to mark way- points that you want to save. Compass to tell direction

How they move with others Average distance between raccoons -320m ( 350yards) Smallest distance apart -9m (9.8yards) Farthest apart -791m (865yards)

Summary Identified home range Analyzed movement Home range for coon534 is 2052 acres Home range for coon575 is 1052 acres Analyzed movement Found no correlation between temperature and movement. Found no correlation between movement and time of year. Established average distances between two raccoons 320m (350yards) Identified preferred habitats Coon575 preferred forest Coon534 preferred forest Territories overlapped between coon575 and coon534 Closest found apart was 9 m
