LYSOSOMES BY: GABBY HARTZEL YVONNE LAURITO

WHAT IS A LYSOSOME? AN ORGANELLE IN THE CYTOPLASM OF EUKARYOTIC CELLS CONTAINING DEGRADATIVE ENZYMES ENCLOSED IN A MEMBRANE

STRUCTURE SURROUNDED BY A MEMBRANE THAT MAINTAINS AN ACIDIC ENVIRONMENT WITHIN THE INTERIOR VIA A PROTON PUMP. CONTAIN A WIDE VARIETY OF HYDROLYTIC ENZYMES (ACID HYDROLASES) THAT BREAK DOWN MACROMOLECULES SUCH AS NUCLEIC ACIDS, PROTEINS, AND POLYSACCHARIDES.

FUNCTION BREAK DOWN WASTE MATERIALS AND CELLULAR DEBRIS “STOMACH OF THE CELL” DIGEST EXCESS OR WORN OUT ORGANELLES, FOOD PARTICLES, AND ENGULFED VIRUSES OR BACTERIA BASICALLY A SPECIALIZED VESICLE THAT HOLDS A VARIETY OF ENZYMES

CUTANEOUS SYNDACTYLY A CONDITION IN WHICH FINGERS OR TOES ARE JOINED TOGETHER, AND THE JOINING INVOLVES ONLY THE SKIN, NOT THE BONES AS FETUSES, EVERYONE HAS WEBBED FEET AND HANDS, BUT THE LYSOSOMES DIGEST THE CELLS OF THE SKIN IN BETWEEN YOUR FINGERS AND TOES WHEN THE LYSOSOMES FAIL TO DO THIS THOUGH, THE SKIN REMAINS BETWEEN THE FINGERS OR TOES

TADPOLES AND LYSOSOMES TADPOLE TAILS DON’T DROP OFF; THEY ARE ABSORBED THE MATERIALS THAT MAKE UP THE TADPOLE TAILS ARE BROKEN DOWN AND REUSED TO MAKE LEGS THE TADPOLE TAIL CELLS KNOW WHEN IT IS TIME FOR THEIR LYSOSOMES TO SPILL THEIR POWERFUL HYDROLASES INTO THEIR OWN CYTOPLASM AND DESTROY THEMSELVES

WHAT IS THE MAIN FUNCTION OF THE LYSOSOMES? Break down waste material & cellular debris Send signals to the rest of the cell Sorting and packaging of proteins for secretion Store materials and waste

WHAT IS THE LYSOSOME OFTEN DESCRIBED AS? Heart of the cell Lungs of the cell Stomach of the cell Brain of the cell

THANK YOU!!
