1.An important fossil used for correlating strata to help predict the location and depth of valuable rock layers is known as an index fossil. 2.Relative dating is a means that geochemists use to derive the absolute dates of the origin of rock layers, through use of technologies. 3.A stratigraphic column is a cylindrical piece of rock removed from the Earth by a large drill, similar to the ones used in oil wells.

4. The Principle of Original Horizontality states that when a new rock layer forms, it is usually laid down on top of another layer that was laid down at some earlier time. 5.
