The Gifted and Talented Education Program seeks to recognize and develop talents in advanced- level learners.

The Talent Development Model Extended Day/Extended Year Programs G/T Classes and Curricular Extensions

Instructional Seminars

Instruction in Advanced-Level Skills Open to All Interested Students Creative Production or Inquiry

Student led and produced daily television show that simulates a professional broadcast

A Book Club organized and led by advanced- level readers who enjoy participating in thought- provoking literary discussions. It is offered in partnership with the Howard County Public Library System.

Students engage in meaningful, persuasive discourse about contemporary issues, thereby strengthening their leadership, critical thinking, and presentation skills. Offered in all middle schools under the direct instruction of the school’s G/T Resource Teacher.

STEM SEMINAR  Students participate in a STEM-related seminar, learning advanced level skills in science, engineering, or mathematics.  Sample STEM seminars include robotics, engineering, cryptology, and environmental studies.

Independent Research Investigations

 Why?  Why? To emulate research tools and methodologies of professionals by investigating real world problems and presenting to authentic audiences  Who?  Who? Available to any interested student  What?  What? Publication of book, scientific discovery, historical reenactment, instigation of legislation, original music/dramatic production…

Curriculum Extension Units

The G/T Writers Guild is a year-long curriculum extension for selected students who participate in 7th grade G/T English. This curriculum is for passionate writers who live to write and are interested in submitting their best writing for possible publication.

Each year, social studies students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research. Final products are entered into competitions in the spring at local, state and national levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators.

Content Classes

 CogAT Testing  administered to all 5 th grade students in December  CogAt is an ability measure, not an achievement test. 5 th TO 6 th PLACEMENT PROCESS

 Placement Committee Recommendations  If a student is not eligible based upon CogAt scores, teachers AUTOMATICALLY review the placement  Letters mailed home by February 26 th. 5 th TO 6 th PLACEMENT PROCESS
