SERMON ON THE MOUNT

Christian Counterculture BEATITUDES: BLESSED? SALT + LIGHT? IS THE LAW DEAD? ARE YOU A MURDERER? WHY AREN’T THERE MORE ONE-EYED CHRISTIANS? LOVE OSAMA BIN LADEN? GOD OR $$$? NO WORRIES?

Can you name any of the top 3 words used by the world to describe Christians?

YANK YOUR PLANKS

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

How can you say to your brother, “Let me take the speck out of your eye,” when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?

You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. (Matthew 7:1-5)

Why does Jesus tell us not to judge?

WE ARE NOT GOD

SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS vs. GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS

IMAGO DEI

FORGIVENESS

What’s Jesus getting at with the whole plank vs. speck thing?

You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?

Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance? (Romans 2:1-4)

Does this mean that Christians should never talk about sin?

If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along... (Matthew 18:15-17)

Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage -- with great patience and careful instruction. (2 Timothy 4:2)

Speak the truth in love. (Ephesians 4:15)
