1. WHAT IS LOCATED ON THE CHROMOSOME? A. CELLULAR ORGANELLES B. HEREDITARY AND GENETIC INFORMATION C. INSTRUCTIONS FOR CELL ACTIVITIES D. ENZYME MATERIALS 2. WHICH OF THE PICTURES BELOW SHOWS A TRAIT THAT IS NOT INHERITED BY OFFSPRING? Bell Work 2/6/15

OBJECTIVES  Describe the relationship among genes, chromosomes, and inherited traits. (SPI )  Interpret a Punnett square to predict possible genetic combinations passed from parents to offspring during sexual reproduction. (SPI )

PUNNETT SQUARE CHALLENGE Each group has two different Punnett Square Challenges in their colored folders. For each challenge you must create and interpret a Punnett square to predict possible genetic combinations passed from parents to offspring during sexual reproduction. The following must be written on a loose leaf sheet of notebook paper: 1.Crossed Punnett square 2.All possible genotypes and phenotypes of offspring 3.The answer to the question (percentages, ratios, etc.) 4.You and your team have 5 minutes. When you are finished, work on Science Art.

GROUP #1 CHALLENGE In dogs, wire hair (W) is dominant to smooth (w). What is the percentage in a cross of a homozygous wire-haired dog with a smooth-haired dog?

GROUP #2 CHALLENGE In rabbits, black fur is dominant to white fur. What are the percentages for a homozygous black rabbit and a homozygous white rabbit?

GROUP #3 CHALLENGE In pea plants, spherical seeds (S) are dominant to dented seeds (s). In a genetic cross of two plants that are heterozygous for seed shape, what ratio of the offspring should have spherical seeds?

GROUP #4 CHALLENGE In fruit flies, red eyes are dominant to white eyes. What is the percentage for heterozygous fruit fly with a homozygous recessive fruit fly?

GROUP #5 CHALLENGE In humans, pointed eyebrows are dominant over smooth eyebrows. What is the ratio for a homozygous woman with pointed eyebrows and a man with smooth eyebrows?

GROUP #6 CHALLENGE In guinea pigs, smooth coat (S) is dominant over rough coat (s) and black coat (B) is dominant over white coat (b). What is the ratio for 2 rough coated guinea pigs?

GROUP #7 CHALLENGE In tomatoes, red fruit (R) is dominant over yellow fruit. What will be the percentage of homozygous yellow tomato and a heterozygous tomato?

GROUP #8 CHALLENGE Shaggy hair in dogs is dominant to its recessive allele, short hair. What is the percentage of 2 heterozygous dogs?

GENETICS PROJECT Directions: 1. You will need to choose one female and one male celebrity. 2. For each celebrity, you need to record the phenotype for the traits listed and pick a genotype. (For example, if Justin Bieber has blonde hair, the genotype would be “bb”. If Selena Gomez has brown hair, her genotype would be either “Bb” or “BB”.) 3. Create a Punnett square to express the possible offspring outcomes. 4. Record the trait the offspring will MOST LIKELY inherit. 5. Draw a picture depicting what the offspring should look like based on inherited traits.

EXIT TICKET Create your own monohybrid Punnett Square cross word problem. Use the examples in your notes for ideas.
