The Process of Fertilization By William Choi

The Sperm Journey Sperm begins its travels in the female’s vagina Then it moves through the cervix into the uterus Its last stop is in the fallopian tube

The Ovum Journey The ovum (egg) has been released from the ovary It has started to travel down the fallopian tube It is ready and waiting for the arrival of sperm so it can be fertilized

Sperm Meets Ovum Only one sperm will be allowed to enter The sperm which have made it to the egg try to penetrate its membrane (egg wall)

Sperm and Ovum Become One Sperm contains half of the genetic information to form a new life The ovum contains the other half of the genetic information The sperm cell releases its nucleus which combines with the egg's DNA to create a zygote A zygote is the first cell of a new life

Final Fertilization Step The zygote then travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus It attaches to the wall of uterus It resides there for the development of a baby
