Presentation transcript:

Food is our body’s source for energy and structural materials.

Go to pg. 332 What is the importance of calcium in your diet? Find the deficiency symptoms column. These are problems that your body can have if you are lacking these elements. What happens when you are lacking potassium in your body? What are the excess symptoms of chlorine?

Carbohydrates: Are used for energy. (Starch and Cellulose) Elements: Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen Breakdown: simple sugars (e.x.Glucose) Sources: Fruits, Vegetables, Pasta, bread, rice

Proteins: Are used for muscle building, growth, and repair of cells. Breakdown: Amino Acids Elements: Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur Sources: Meat, nuts, soy, fish, dairy products.

Lipids (Fats): Are used for storing energy, controlling hormones, insulation, protection from injury. Elements : Carbon, Hydrogen, some oxygen. Breakdown: Fatty acids and glycerol Sources: butter, oils, eggs(yolk), avocados.

Nucleic Acids Are biomolecules that store information in your cells. Ex. DNA and RNA. All food, since it comes from living things, has DNA. The job of DNA is to make proteins.
