The City of Ember Summary Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow are both twelve years old. They are students of the Highest Class of the Ember School. As the book opens, it's Assignment Day or the day the twelve-year-olds are given their jobs. The assignments are the jobs they do for living. There are jobs written on slips of paper in a bag and each student draws a slip to determine his job.

Summary Continued Lina is assigned to work in the Pipeworks and Doon is assigned to be a messenger. Doon is certain that the city is in trouble.. He trades assignments with Lina, hoping he can do something good for the city if he's working in the Pipeworks. Lina accepts the trade, loving the idea of being a messenger.

Summary Continued When their city is about to run out of light, Doon and Lina find an instruction that might save them from the darkness. But the mayor is blocking their way to save Ember. Lina found a thick piece of paper that had something written on it. Most of the letters had been faded away. The only word that Lina could understand was instructions. That gave Lina and Doon an idea that it might help them leave the city.

Text to Text Number The Stars In “Number the Stars” everyone who is Jewish can’t leave the country or go anywhere so people are trying to escape secretly City Of Ember Everyone is trapped in an underground city and can’t get out. Lina and Doon found a paper with instructions that might help them leave the City of Ember

Text to Self In “City of Ember” granny forgets Poppy in the shop while she is looking for something. When Lina gets home and asks where Poppy is granny says “I forgot her in the shop”. Lina runs to the store to find Poppy and brings her home. Granny can be so forgetful. When I was a little baby my mom was in a hurry to get home from the grocery store that she forgot me in the stroller at the cashier and her purse. But later when she sat in the car she said to herself, “There’s something missing”. She looks back and doesn’t see me so she runs back into the store to find me.

Reflection #1 The main characters of the book who are Lina, Doon and Poppy, are very adventurous, active and smart. Their thoughts and actions made the book more interesting to me. But the pace of the book was really fast, especially when they moved to one place to another. What really got me interested into the book was when they found the piece of paper that had letters that faded away. I was curious because I wanted to figure out the words myself. I kept trying and trying until I gave up. The only word I knew was instructions. That gave me an idea that it was instructions that might help the people in the city of Ember. Later on, when I read the book it told me what the letters said because Lisa and Doon solved the missing words.

Reflection #2 I think the author’s message was to make good friendships. In good and bad times you should always have a friend beside you. You should always work together. In the book Doon and Lina were best friends. They both worked together to get out of the underground city of Ember. They figured out the missing words from the faded paper and later found a way out.

Reflection #3 After I finished the book I still had questions in my mind and they were: What really made them live underground apart? Why didn’t the builders of Ember want them (the people of Ember)to know about the world up above? And why didn’t they bring any animals with them?

Possibility of Darkness and Hunger Lina and Doon are caught up in the mystery of the instructions and both are excited about the possibility they might solve the mystery. However, they are more concerned with the need to make their world better so they and their families can survive. Lina, along with every other citizen in Ember, has considered the possibility that the generator will go off permanently, leaving the entire city in darkness. Added to that is the realization that supplies are dangerously low. There are few light bulbs and little food remaining in the city's storerooms. There are few supplies such as clothing and pencils. When Lina visits the greenhouses, she learns from Clary that a blight has struck some of the crops. These shortages added to the concern about the generator have put people on edge. When the Mayor addresses the people of Ember, his message is simply not to worry. While Lina and Doon are doing their best to make out of underground Ember.

Inference In the book “City of Ember” they made me think about one character the most. The character’s name was Poppy. I kept talking to myself saying, “Is Poppy a girl or boy?” The name sounded like a boy name mostly to me until I got to one part of the book. It was in the beginning few chapters. It kept saying for example: Lina’s sister or she.
