RESEARCH ARTICLES You MUST read each of the following slides to complete this step of your research well.

EbscoHost  You will find 2 articles from this database.  For each article complete the following IN THIS ORDER:  Pre-SCARAB worksheet---read the directions on handout  Annotate (minimum of 10 per page)  Summarize the article  Type up the summary (minimum of 100 words. 150 maximum)  SCARAB rubric (see Benton when you have finished the above)

Researching for your paper:  Go to the OSH homepage  Go to “For Students”  Click on “Media Center”  Once at the Media Center, click on “Databases”  Click on “EbscoHost”

EbscoHost  Click on EbscoHost Web (the first icon)  Scroll down to EbscoHost MEGA file and check the box.  Scroll down and also check Science Reference Center.  Hit “Continue”

EbscoHost Step 1  In the search box, type in key words/phrases for your topic. Go to the next slide.  You may have to try a variety of phrases to find something useful. DON’T GIVE UP!!!!

EbscoHost Step 2 Before you hit “Enter,” refine your search.

EbscoHost Step 3 Leave these boxes alone!

EbscoHost Step 4 Click “Search”!!!

EbscoHost Step 5 Citation Button!! This will help you fill out the Works Cited information on your Pre-SCARAB worksheet. The Cite button will be located on the far RIGHT of your screen. Be sure to change the citation to MLA. See the next slide.

EbscoHost still Step 5… Notice: The author’s name is set up wrong! It should be like this: Author’s last name, first name. If there are 2 authors, set it up like this: Author’s last name, first name and first name last name. Example: Smith, Joe and Jane Smith Fill in your cheat sheet with the information above. Questions? ASK!

EbscoHost Step 6  Now you need to find good research!  Find 2 articles you want to use for your paper.  Fill out the Pre-SCARAB worksheet for each article.  Then, print. Follow the directions on the handout.  When you have printed, you should annotate and summarize. Summary must be typed.  When finished annotating and summarizing, see Benton for a SCARAB rubric. Once you are done with all the work for these 2 database articles and have checked in with your teacher, then you may move on to the website article. **Remember, you will need to find one more source (keep reading!). All your work needs to be done by November 1 st. **

Website Article  You will find 1 article from a website.  For this article complete the following IN THIS ORDER:  Pre-SCARAB worksheet (Read the directions)  Annotate (minimum of 10 per page)  Summarize the article  Type up the summary (minimum of 100 words. 150 maximum)  SCARAB rubric (See Benton for this when you have done the above

Website Article Step 1  First of all, websites that end in.gov (government pages),.org (non-profit organization pages), and.edu (education pages) tend to be more reliable than.com websites. That’s because these 3 endings are under more regulation and supervision than.com websites.  Also look for sites that are published by well-known institutions, not just some random person.

Works Cited Clues for Websites:  If there is no author’s name, leave it blank! Otherwise, the author’s name could be at the bottom of the article.  The title of the website will probably located at the top of the webpage with some type of logo. Website TitleArticle Title

More clues for Works Cited Websites:  For the date of the article, if one is given, use it! But most likely, there won’t be one. So, scroll down to find the copyright or last updated date. This will be at the bottom of the webpage.  The group that publishes the website may or may not be the same as the title of the website. Find the group that published at the bottom of the site near the date.  Questions? ASK! Last Updated date! Publisher

Website:  Now you need to find good research!  Find 1 article you want to use for your paper.  Fill out the Pre-SCARAB worksheet for the article.  Then, print. Follow the directions on the handout.  When you have printed, you should annotate and summarize. Summary must be typed.  When finished annotating and summarizing, see Benton for a SCARAB rubric. Once you are done with all the work for this website, and have checked in with your teacher, then you will turn in all your research articles for a summative grade. **Remember, all your work is due by 2:30 on November 1 st. ** Late work will be penalized! Phone calls will be made.
