Linear Growing Patterns Day 1 BIG IDEAS By Wendy Telford and Judy Dussiaume

Learning Goals Build a collaborative math talk learning community (MTLC) Develop an understanding of big ideas for Linear Growing Patterns (LGP) Establish connections between big ideas, the curriculum, and lesson goals Make conscious instructional decisions that enable students to communicate their thinking around the big ideas

Group Norms All ideas will be listened to carefully and responded to respectfully; Everyone will have a voice; All suggestions will be presented with the intent to move the collective forward; Clarifying questions are welcome; Everyone will engage fully in the moment; Suffering is optional!

Minds On – Ice Breaker Record a strategy you might use to help your students get to know each other at the beginning of a course on an index card. While the music plays, circulate and share your Name, Board, School and Get-to-Know-You Strategy with as many people as possible.

Minds On: Handshake Problem Determine the number of handshakes that happen at the party. Consider: How else could you solve the problem? How might your students solve the problem? What do you notice about the solutions?

Action - Big Ideas of Linear Growing Patterns 1.The study of the mathematical structure of patterns is a foundation to algebraic reasoning.

Action - Big Ideas of Linear Growing Patterns 2.The mathematical structure of a linear growing pattern can be represented in different ways (e.g., numeric, graphical, geometric, algebraic). Different representations highlight different characteristics and can serve different purposes.

Action - Big Ideas of Linear Growing Patterns 3.Linear Growing Patterns can be distinguished from other patterns by the way they grow.

Action - Big Ideas of Linear Growing Patterns 4.Two pieces of information about a linear growing pattern can be sufficient information to fully describe the pattern.

Action - Big Ideas of Linear Growing Patterns Digest and Discuss: Have we captured the main ideas you want students to take away with them in this unit?

Action - Big Ideas of Linear Growing Patterns Using effective questioning is one strategy to capture the big ideas for your students. Complete BLM 1.2, and match as many questions as you can to big ideas. Now match overall curriculum expectations to big ideas.

Action - Big Ideas of Linear Growing Patterns Use your Pattern Partners Appointment Slip to find partners for upcoming activities. Find your Geometric Pattern Partner and read the TIPS lesson for Grade 7, Unit 5, Day 2 (BLM LGP 1.5)

Action - Big Ideas of Linear Growing Patterns Discuss with your partner: –How well does this lesson connect to big ideas of LGP? Find examples within the lesson that support the connection. –How might you modify this lesson to connect more strongly to big ideas? –What questions could you add to this lesson to highlight big ideas for your students?

Consolidate – Lesson Review Keeping Big Ideas in Mind Share at your table your assessment of the TIPS lesson and any changes you might consider. On your index card, complete the sentence “The Most Important Thing About Linear Growing Patterns is …”
