Bellringer  Answer in your journal question on page 57 of textbook.

Ch6b: Joseph

Joseph  Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son (first born of Rachel)  Given a coat of many colors (symbol of power and nobility)  Had the power to interpret dreams  Predicted that his brothers would one day bow down to him

Joseph and His Brothers  Brothers were jealous of Joseph  Threw Joseph in a well  Sold into Egyptian slavery by brothers  Brothers told Jacob he was killed and eaten by a wild animal

In Egypt  Sold to the house of Potiphar (important Egyptian official)  Became head servant of Potiphar’s house  Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph but he resisted her advances  She accused him of assaulting her because of his rejection

In Jail  Joseph was put in jail (became the head of the jail)  In jail he met the Pharaoh’s baker and butler  Interpreted their dreams for them

Butler’s and Baker’s Dreams  Bakers dreamed he was attacked by birds  Baker would be executed  Butler dreamed he was serving the Pharaoh again  Butler would be returned to his place in the palace (Joseph asked him to remember him)  Butler forgot about Joseph until the Pharaoh had a dream no one could interpret

Pharaoh's Dream  Seven healthy cows eaten by seven sick cows  Seven healthy ears of corn (wheat) took over by seven bad ears  Joseph said the dream was predicting 7 good harvest years and 7 years of severe famine

Joseph’s Rise to Power  Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of preparing for famine  Joseph became second in command behind Pharaoh  Egypt was the only nation to have food during the famine

Joseph Reunites with his Family  Other nations went to Egypt to buy food (including Joseph’s family)  Joseph and his brothers eventually reconcile

Hebrews in Egypt  Joseph had his entire family move to Egypt  They are given the best land in the entire nation (Goshen)  Children of Israel stay in Egypt for over 400 years until they return to Canaan under the leadership of Moses (take Joseph’s bones with them)
