Foundations of Fitness ERICA O’HAGAN & LARRISA PYWOWARIW

FOF start with….  Understanding how important it is to be physically active every day  Knowing how to take care of your body, exercise safely, and live a healthy life style.  Evaluating our fitness levels, by taking fitness tests

What are the FOF? Health Related fitness Cardio Flexibility Muscle Strength muscle endurance Sport Related Fitness Speed Reaction Time Coordination Power Balance Agility

Fitnessgram Fitness ComponentHealthy Zone (age 17 and up) Pacer test Normal weight ( girls) (boys) Curl up Trunk Lift9-12in(girls) 9-12in( Boys) Push up Sit and Reach12 in(girls) 8in(boys) BMI Example A comprehensive fitness assessment for youth that includes a variety of health related physical tests.

Why is this important/ Strengths Pre-assessment  Students can become aware of where their fitness levels are  Students can see what they need to improve on  This gives healthy students confidence about their fitness levels  Healthy competition Post-assessment  Students set goals on what they want their numbers to be for the post-assessment  This keeps them motivated and physically active

Weaknesses / negatives of test  Students who struggle through these test can become discouraged  Many students do not push themselves because they are afraid what they “look like”  Overly competitive  Students start to compare themselves to other and it has a negative affect on them  Students are afraid of doing poorly and it effects their performance

Availability  Fitness gram test reaches over 20,000 schools and 10 million students in the united states alone.  If not provided at your high school, anyone has the ability to take this test.test Safety  Fitness testing is a very safe way to understand the foundations of fitness if done correctly  If educators and students are not educated correctly on how to perform each test, it can be a risk  Prone to injury if done incorrectly  Educators must read students if they are pushing themselves to hard and force them to stop. Ex-pacer test

Cost’s  Equipment costs  Curl up mat- $27.99  Baseline flex tester- $  Pull up bar – $  If taken in high school, it Is free for students

It has been proven that physically active youth have…  Higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness, and muscle strength.  Lower body fatness  Stronger bones  Reduced symptoms in anxiety and depression. Enforcing these foundations of fitness through the fitness tests in schools and in our youth will increase these facts.
