Smart Energy …… pilot major smart-living projects in Wales.

Smart living Vs Central generation Smarter buildings( internet of things/big data/smart meters). Demand side management /energy efficiency. Distributed generation with local consumption(micro- grids, district heating, etc). Smart grids/energy storage. Integrated community/city, wide energy systems(inc smarter transport). Strong public support, esp if resilient, but? Transmission grids(electricity and gas) already smart and efficient but: -which power stations: nuclear, gas, coal, renewables- at what cost? -remoteness issues: grid and economic impact. -big stations can have big local environmental impacts. -security of supply importance. -public engagement/political debates around prices and carbon ? Balance? New utilities model? System architect required?

Drivers of Change Energy Paradigm The energy world is changing dramatically with much greater focus on the local and less on big centralised electricity generation – an enormous paradigm change Energy Trilemma

Visual Context? One way Flow Passive Management Major Generators Two way flow on networks Balancing power houses/buildings Diversity of generation sources Differing business models Entertain technology developments

Smart Living Development Mapping exercise Desk Research Developed a framework Identified “first wave” demonstrators Framework tested in workshops

Smart living vision Wales has the opportunity to influence the future by using demonstrators that will innovatively transform homes, businesses and communities providing multiple benefits for all

Smart Living Lead Principles Advance learning Adopt a Team Wales Balance low carbon, affordability and security attributes

Smart Living Scope INTEGRATE INTELLIGENT INTERACTIVE INNOVATIVE

Smart Living Demonstrator Criteria

Welsh Government Roles

Demonstrators – First Wave

Smart living – R+D projects ETI - Bridgend Smart systems and heat – Phase 1 modelling – Phase 2 delivery, funding being negotiated DECC/ WEFO – Potential for SBRI around heat delivery infrastructure systems? WPD Hydrogen – Aim to relieve pinch points on the network and develop a hydrogen model that provides multiple benefits Looking a potential for H2 and fleets and associated heat Lower cost options for fleet conversions ? Improve potential for integration of gas and electricity networks through different energy vector mediums?

Smart living – R+D projects Blaenau Gwent local model catalysing Energy for local benefits – Creating 4 or relevant platforms connecting energy and local area regeneration and economic benefit utilising potential peer to peer, aggregation, balancing technology and systems – Refurbishment of industrial estates with emphasis on buildings not businesses, fuel poverty, service bundling – Initial scoping work needs to be done on what is feasible and how this could be approached – Cardiff university have been involved SPEN Anglesey Energy Island – MV DC – Innovative solution to grid constraints in Anglesey 1 st in Europe – Trialling innovative medium voltage DC solutions – Multiple benefits to the area – associated with marine developments and transport

Smart living – R+D projects OFGEM non traditional business models - cross cutting – Strong participation in the consultation – Keen to work on demonstrators and test areas for NTBM – First call to lessen bureaucracy around “sleeving” where Local Authorities generate and use themselves with new business model – Links to potential DSO rather than DNO roles West Wales zero carbon zones and themed smart living demonstrators – Facilitate low carbon secure and affordable demonstrators for West Wales – Themed analysis of “smart” within health/education/transport to learn about benefits and value added whilst addressing key issues

Smart living – R+D projects Potential other knotty problems -New housing developments – how do we ensure these are different ? -The broader aspects of smart living – transport, health and care -Off gas grid areas -Cooling and cryogenics -Multi vector and utility using water/gas/electricity/heat as one infrastructure approach for Wales -Smart urban middle road development

Smart living – R+D projects Flexis – Research focused – Building on Cardiff universities strength in energy systems – Incorporating Geo Energy work, Hydrogen, combustion – Also contributes behavioural and consumer understanding and engagement which is critical for success of demonstrators – Potential to work on the demonstrators SPECIFIC – Commercialisation phase of buildings as power stations

SBRI Challenge led procurement for the public sector – Challenge around portable energy solutions – How do you use derelict land, temporary use – Novel PV solutions being developed
