CHIEN-SHIUNG WU CONTINUED BORN MAY 31, 1912 LIUHE IN TAICANG, JIANGSU PROVINCE IN CHINA STUDIED AT HER FATHER'S PRIVATE SCHOOL FOR GIRLS IN LIU HO UNTIL SHE WAS NINE ATTENDED SUZHOU GIRLS' SCHOOL FOR TEACHER TRAINING, GRADUATED IN 1930, THIS IS WHERE SHE LEARNED ENGLISH, SHE ALSO STUDIED SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS ON HER OWN SINCE IT WAS NOT PART OF THE CURRICULUM GRADUATED IN 1930 AS VALEDICTORIAN NATIONAL CENTRAL UNIVERSITY, GRADUATED IN 1934 WITH A B.S. IN PHYSICS DID GRADUATE-LEVEL STUDY IN PHYSICS AND ALSO WORKED AS AN ASSISTANT AT THE ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY IN 1936 MOVED TO UNITED STATES TO STUDIED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY CHIEN-SHIUNG WU RECEIVED HER PH. D. IN PHYSICS TAUGHT AT SMITH COLLEGE IN MARCH OF 1944 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY RECRUITED WU FOR THEIR WAR RESEARCH DEPARTMENT IN 1952 BECAME ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN 1958, CHIEN-SHIUNG WU WAS MADE A FULL PROFESSOR AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY SHE BECAME THE FIRST WOMAN TO WIN THE RESEARCH CORPORATION AWARD, AND THE SEVENTH WOMAN TO BE ELECTED TO THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES IN 1964, CHIEN-SHIUNG WU WAS AWARDED THE CYRUS B. COMSTOCK AWARD BY THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, THE FIRST WOMAN TO WIN THAT AWARD. IN 1965, SHE PUBLISHED BETA DECAY, WHICH BECAME A STANDARD TEXT IN NUCLEAR PHYSICS.

CHIEN-SHIUNG WU CONTINUED IN 1972, CHIEN-SHIUNG WU BECAME A MEMBER OF THE ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES, AND IN 1972, WAS APPOINTED TO AN ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIP BY COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY. IN 1974, SHE WAS NAMED SCIENTIST OF THE YEAR BY INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH MAGAZINE. IN 1976, SHE BECAME THE FIRST WOMAN TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY, AND THAT SAME YEAR WAS AWARDED A NATIONAL MEDAL OF SCIENCE. IN 1978, SHE WON THE WOLF PRIZE IN PHYSICS. IN 1981, CHIEN-SHIUNG WU RETIRED SHE DIED IN 1997 IN NEW YORK CITY

DEGREES BECAME A CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES IN 1949 A YEAR LATER WAS ELECTED JUDGE OF JUSTICE COURT FOR WESTMORELAND JUDICIAL DISTRICT BUT WAS DENIED SEAT, BECAUSE HE HAD ONLY BEEN A CITIZEN ONE YEAR IN 1952 HE WAS ELECTED JUDGE OF THE SAME COURT AND SERVED UNTIL HIS RESIGNATION JANUARY 1, 1957 JANUARY 3, 1957-JANUARY 3, 1963 ELECTED AS A DEMOCRAT TO THE EIGHTY-FIFTH AND TO THE TWO SUCCEEDING CONGRESSES DIED APRIL 22, 1973, IN HOLLYWOOD, CALIF.
