Active and Passive Transport Chapter 9

Essential Questions 1. How do materials travel in and out of the cell Essential Questions 1. How do materials travel in and out of the cell? 2. Compare types of active and passive transport. Vocabulary Selectively Permeable Membrane- a membrane that allows only certain materials to pass through it. Carrier Proteins- proteins in the cell membrane that allow materials to pass through the membrane. Introduce the lesson with an activity involving all students. Review the vocabulary terms above. Have the class get into a circle the diameter of the room. Explain that they are the cell membrane. Review the function of the cell membrane. Some of them are carrier proteins. They are responsible for carring materials inside the cell. (Every 5 people are carrier proteins) Review respiration by explaining that the cell needs energy and needs to go through respiration. What does the cell need to go through respiration? If I am an organelle going through respiration what organelle am I? Explain that as a cell membrane it does not let large things into the cell. Bring out a large ball. Will this go through? (Bring in several size balls to model different molecules. Also a cotton ball which will model a molecule of glucose. Have students who are carrier proteins throw the cotton ball to me (as a mitochondria). It should not reach? What can we do to make it easier for the glucose to get to the mitochondria? (Make the cell smaller).

How does the cell membrane control the materials that move in and out of the cell? Passive Transport The movement of materials through the membrane without using cellular energy. Active Transport The movement of materials through the cell membrane using cellular energy called ATP. (adenosine tri-phosphate)

What are two examples of Passive Transport? Diffusion The process in which molecules move through the cell membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Osmosis The process in which water molecules moves through the cell membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

What are examples on active transport? Transport proteins The use of transport proteins in the cell act as gatekeepers moving materials in and out of the cell. Example- Sodium Pump 2. Phagocytosis The process in which the cell membrane surrounds the material and engulf it.
