Presentation transcript:

Starter Give three things we can learn from the very first lines of Mark’s Gospel: 1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”— 3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”

Starter Give three things we can learn from the very first lines of Mark’s Gospel: -Jesus is the Son of God, he has come to save us. (v1) -This book will be good news to everyone and change our lives for the better. (v1) -Jesus is fulfilling the Old Testament predictions that a saviour will come. (v2) -It gives us the role of John the Baptist preparing the way. (v3) - Tells us the Gospel is written from faith to give faith

Task 5: Complete any missing work or ANY places I have written additional questions. (Use a textbook if you need to) Task 6:Glue in ALL sheets.

Jesus’ Baptism LO: To explore the story of Jesus’ baptism and it’s symbolism and significance. D/E – I can retell Jesus’ baptism. B/C – I can explain the symbolism in Jesus’ baptism. A*/A – I can argue for the significance of Jesus’ baptism.

While you watch the clip complete your worksheet and consider the following questions: Why is this event important for Christians? What do we learn about: – Jesus? – God? – Being a Christian?

John the Baptist Add this extra explanation about your facts on John the Baptist: -He didn’t wear fashionable clothes to set himself apart from the people at the time. He also dressed similarly to the prophet Elijah. -He chose to live in the desert to stay away from distractions and hear God clearer. -To be baptised was to radically depart from your old life. -His duty was to prepare the way for Jesus.

Most – I can explain the symbolism in Jesus’ baptism. Annotate the key parts in the passage with the information below: This represents the Holy Spirit falling upon Jesus. In the Old Testament the voice of the spirit was likened to the voice of the turtle dove. It could also be a symbol of peace. Jesus was receiving direct divine approval from God that he was God’s beloved Son. Jesus already was God’s Son since the beginning, but this confirms it for us. This happened to show God is breaking out upon us: God’s Kingdom is arriving.

Tell your partner about what things in Jesus’ baptism mean.. ? dove ? voice ? heavens torn ? ”my Son” ? ”well pleased”

Some – I can argue for the significance of Jesus’ baptism. Explain why was Jesus’ baptism significant? (4 marks) You may want to include the ideas below but you need to explain them. It was a turning point in Jesus’ life. It is the confirmation that Jesus is the Son of God. All of the Trinity are present for the first time. It sets Jesus up as being the proclaimed of God’s Good News.

Why did Jesus, who was sinless, go to be baptised by John’s baptism, for the forgiveness of sins? Why is Christian baptism a rite of initiation?

Choose 4 correct answers why Jesus asked John to baptise him, even though he was sinless and did not have any sins to repent of. Choose 2 reasons why Christians get baptised. a.To purify himself of any sins before starting his mission b.To start a new mission of proclaiming God’s kingdom c.To identify himself with sinful humanity, and take our sins as his own: since it is our sins he will die for JESUS d.To be part of a new, purified, committed “people of God” e.To show he is humble: and be an example to us of humility f.To show that John is his master, and he is John’s disciple g.To use this opportunity to declare himself as the Messiah to the public h.There was Jewish belief that the Messiah would be anointed by a prophet (as all Jewish prophets and kings were)
