CHAPTER 9 Genetic Engineering Engage Activity

Genetic Engineering Be prepared to share your thoughts on the entry task. Remember, when you brainstorm, there are NO WRONG ANSWERS!!! We will generate a list of these thoughts. I will record the class list and you should have recorded five items from list in your lab notebook.

Genetic Engineering With your table partner, discuss your list. Identify (using - and + symbols) which statements you think are misconceptions about Genetic Engineering and which statements you think are accurate.

GE Background Information Read “Manipulating DNA” on p 457 in the textbook. In your lab notebook write…… ◦ 3 new ideas from the reading ◦ 2 connections you can make w/ past learning ◦ 1 question you have about the new material

GE Background Information Study figure 9.10 on the following slide. As you study the diagram, frame your thinking with this question….. “How do vectors and fragments combine to make a changed organism?”

GE Background Information Check For Understanding…. Write a 2 minute essay in your lab notebook using the following prompt: Imagine using the technique shown on the previous slide to create a transgenic or genetically engineered organism (GEO). What would you create? Why? How would you go about making this transgenic organism?
