Presentation transcript:

Charles Demuth 1883-1935 Grew up in Pennsylvania Had Art training at a University and started to travel to learn about art. He was well liked by the New York Art world. His style developed into Cubist-Realist American Artist

Cubist –Realist: A Cubist arranges their artwork using geometric shapes (Circles, squares, triangles, ect) in various colors and textures. A Realist painted art that looked like it would really appear. He combined these two styles.

Can you see the difference in styles? Pointillism Painted in small, distinct dots of pure color are applied in patterns to form an image Post-Impressionism Real life subject matter, vivid color and thick brush strokes. Cubist Realism Sharply defined geometric shapes, a movement that started in the 1920’s

I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold 1928 What do you think this is or represents to the artist? What shapes do you see? What colors are you used? A Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. How many values can you find of gold?

This is what inspired Demuth for his Figure 5 painting: The Great Figure Among the rain and lights I saw the figure 5 In gold On a red Fire truck Moving Tense Unheeded To gong clangs Siren howls And wheels rumbling Through the dark city.
