doc.: IEEE /320R0 Submission May 2003 Terry Cole, AMDSlide SDL Amendments Terry Cole, AMD WG Technical Editor

doc.: IEEE /320R0 Submission May 2003 Terry Cole, AMDSlide 2 Outline About Current SDL Moving Forward –If you choose to “remove” the SDL –If you choose to “freeze” the SDL –How to “amend” the SDL –If you choose to “amend” the SDL

doc.: IEEE /320R0 Submission May 2003 Terry Cole, AMDSlide 3 About SDL Annex C (SDL) is normative. –Precedence between normative text and SDL is *not* specified. –Please make official interpretation request to resolve contradictions. The SDL is a graphical & formal description to go with the the specification… –…as opposed to being a design that compiles and simulates. –There are lots of syntax errors and most likely model errors. –There are no input or output stimuli. The main body/Annexes reference SDL directly in few places. The SDL relies on textual description & embedded comments of some functions rather than formal description. The SDL has been maintained on the basis of member contributions and comments. –There are likely functions and parameters of the main body, a and b that are missing.

doc.: IEEE /320R0 Submission May 2003 Terry Cole, AMDSlide 4 Options & Guidance Guidance is not being provided for what option to choose: –CAC has discussed this issue and currently has no recommendation. –WG has adopted some motions in past, although disconnected from implementation through a current PAR. –WG Task Groups are proceeding with varied actions: g amended SDL h did no work on Annex C e and i have removed SDL in current drafts. Options brought to table thus far: –Remove Annex C, –“Freeze” Annex C, and –Amend Annex C. Whatever you do effects every once approved! –Already approved work is modified. –Future work is effected.

doc.: IEEE /320R0 Submission May 2003 Terry Cole, AMDSlide 5 If you “remove” SDL Fix the explicit references to Annex C … –… in main body and other Annexes (especially Annex A) –Search for Annex C, SDL, state diagram, flow chart, etc. You must have PAR scope for this change. –Debatable throughout the process of approval. Schedule ballot comment resolution process. –Likely comments back and forth on SDL deletion. –Likely comments to include more detail in text that are being deleted from SDL. –Comments must adhere to rules. Be Specific. Provide sufficient information that group understand what would be acceptable to the commenter.

doc.: IEEE /320R0 Submission May 2003 Terry Cole, AMDSlide 6 If you “freeze” SDL Amend the description of Annex C. –Describe what is/isn’t modeled in SDL. –If appropriate, add notes to specific SDL diagrams indicating where function is not modeled and reference sub-clauses. Make sure added text in main body is clear enough without formal description. Schedule ballot comment resolution process. –Likely comments to include more detail in text/SDL. –Comments must adhere to rules. Be Specific. Provide sufficient information that group understand what would be acceptable to the commenter.

doc.: IEEE /320R0 Submission May 2003 Terry Cole, AMDSlide 7 How to “amend” SDL Guideline depends on complexity & extent. –Existing text block changes … e.g., declarations, definitions, simple label changes Use standard edit instructions and show revision marks. No graphics needed. –A few page changes or new pages (up to ~8) Draw changes using any acceptable graphics editor to look like existing SDL. Submit these pages to WG technical editor, who will make changes in one meeting cycle (2 months) for you. –(continued next page)

doc.: IEEE /320R0 Submission May 2003 Terry Cole, AMDSlide 8 How to “amend” SDL …options (continued) –More than 8 new pages or complex changes: Create and fill a WG SDL editor role. –Telelogic is willing to provide SDL editor for limited purpose to enable work (est. 30 days lead-time). –Estimated 24 hours of self-training / exploration needed to learn how to modify, copy, create, print, output drawings using Telelogic tool. TG Identify location of changes and content for changes. –Do not leave this open ended or up to editor! –Find where changes and additions located in existing diagrams. –Determine sub-clause numbers that describe the explicit functions to be added at each page. –Allow editor to create flowcharts off-line! Review new pages as PDF attachments to amendment. –Also possible to include as WMF drawing in WORD but watch out for loss of resolution.

doc.: IEEE /320R0 Submission May 2003 Terry Cole, AMDSlide 9 If you “amend” SDL Changes to SDL will not be verified by simulation or significant syntax checking. –…rather solely by peer review and comment resolution. –Annex C is not a functional model. Expect approximately two comment cycles to make SDL changes accurate. –If copying, look out for cut and paste errors. –Watch out for “ripple” effects. –… based on accuracy required in formal description. Comments must adhere to rules. –Be Specific. –Provide sufficient information that group understand what would be acceptable to the commenter.
