Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers Objective: Learn to add and subtract mixed numbers.
To add and subtract mixed numbers: Steps: 1. First add or subtract the fractions. (Follow the adding and subtracting fraction steps from lesson 6-1.) 2. If necessary, change to equivalent fractions using the common denominators (LCD). 3. Add or subtract the fractions, then the whole numbers. 4. Simplify if necessary. 5. If your answer is improper, rewrite the answer as a proper mixed number in simplest form. Example 1: 5 6 7 - 3 1 2___ Example 2: 7 4 9 + 10 2 9_____
Borrowing: 8 5 - 3 2 - 4 3 5___ 4______ When subtracting fractions, if after you change the fractions using common denominators (LCD), the numerator in the first fraction is smaller than the numerator in the second fraction, you will have to borrow. When borrowing you have to take one away from the whole number. Then you will add the same amount in the denominator to the numerator. Then you may subtract normally. For Example: 9 1 5 - 4 3 4______ 8 - 3 2 5___
Examples: 8 5 - 6 2 1 3_____ Examples: 7 _ 3 2 4
Homework: Add or subtract each mixed number. Simply your answer. 7) 2 1 2 + 3 1 4______
