CHAPTER 5 Introduction to Word Processing

OBJECTIVES 1.Define common terms related to word processing 2.Create, format, edit, save, and print Microsoft Word documents

Common Terms in Word Processing and Office Applicants Block A selected section of text that is treated as a unit Clipboard A holding area or buffer for copied or cut data for later use Font A descriptive look or shape, size, style, and weight of a group of characters or symbols

Common Terms in Word Processing and Office Applications Footer An information area that is placed consistently at the bottom of each page of a document Format The process of editing the appearance of a document by using: Indentations Margins Tabs, Justification Pagination

Common Terms in Word Processing and Office Applications Hard Return A code inserted in the document by pressing the Enter key Header An information area that is placed consistently at the top of each page of a document Indent To establish tab settings that place lines of text the same number of space from the margin

Common Terms in Word Processing and Office Applications Insert Add characters in the text at the point of the cursor Justified Text is aligned relative to the left and right margins Move Permits the user to relocate text or graphics to another place

Common Terms in Word Processing and Office Applications Outliner Enables the user to plan and rearrange large documents in an outline form Overtype Replace the character under the cursor by the character typed Page Break Place where Words ends the text on one page before it continues text on the next page

Common Terms in Word Processing and Office Applications Pagination Numbers or marks that are used to indicate the sequence of the pages Scrolling Moving around a document to view a specific portion of a page of text within a document Section Breaks Permit you to create layout or formatting changes in a document

Common Terms in Word Processing and Office Applications SmartArt Permits you to easily create a visual representation of your information Smart Tags A pop-up that appears when you place the insertion point over certain text Soft Return Code inserted in the document automatically when the typed line reaches the right margin

Common Terms in Word Processing and Office Applications Spell Checker Checks words for correct spelling Tab A setting that places the subsequent text on that line a certain number of spaces or inches in from the left margin Thesaurus Helps you search for alternative words

Common Terms in World Processing and Office Applications Toggle Switches from one mode of operation to another mode: on or off Word Wrap Automatically carries words over to the next line if they extend beyond the margin

Data Exchange Saving Work Periodically save your work Pay attention to warnings that the software gives Always keep a backup or duplicate copy of a document Using Keyboard Commands
