EXECUTIVE REVIEW COMMITTEE – FALL TERM DECEMBER 2, 2015

BRIEFING 60 responses Open from October to end of November Distributed online Review of executives as a whole, followed by individual reviews

DO YOU KNOW YOUR DSU EXECUTIVES?

THE EXECUTIVES AS A TEAM

PRESIDENT

POSITIVE OPINIONS FOR THE PRESIDENT Casual and transparent. Doing a good job of bringing the DSU to the people Good leader and staying on top of other people’s jobs. Good commitment Approachable Supportive of other executives “Text the pres” is great!

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE PRESIDENT More effort on representing the majority and not the minority More connection with the student body – not all students aware of who he is More representation on Sexton campus More delegation and leadership – more communication to lead the group

VICE PRESIDENT (INTERNAL)

POSITIVE OPINIONS FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT (INTERNAL) Very approachable Active and enthusiastic Good representation on Sexton campus

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT (INTERNAL) More promoting at Carleton campus – DSU posters are old DSU website needs to be more user friendly Stronger communication to help society leaders – being on top of social media and answering s Make ratifications easier More effort towards societies that are not levied – too much attention on societies like NSPIRG and Loaded Ladle

VICE PRESIDENT (FINANCE AND OPERATIONS)

POSITIVE OPINIONS FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT (FINANCE AND OPERATIONS) Very approachable Willing to discuss finances

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT (FINANCE AND OPERATIONS) Release of investment portfolio and making investment decisions more democratic Further funding of DSU initiatives (Sexual Assault Line) More transparency on DSU initiatives such as the cost and justification (Sexual Assault Line) Idea of having an interactive budget online Faster process of completing the audit and obtaining funding More communication with societies and students for decisions

VICE PRESIDENT (ACADEMIC AND EXTERNAL)

POSITIVE OPINIONS FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT (ACADEMIC AND EXTERNAL) Good focus on issues related to social justice Been good at having a firm presence in the senate/academic realm Responsible Good outreach and contact with students

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT (ACADEMIC AND EXTERNAL) More representation of the majority rather than the minority More efforts of making academics better for all students Need to outreach to students of colour as well as international students Need for increased needs-based support systems rather than “lower tuition/fees” to improve accessibility Use less extreme rhetoric and create a less hostile and unwelcoming environment Have a more neutral position (election), less political opinions

VICE PRESIDENT (STUDENT LIFE)

POSITIVE OPINIONS FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT (STUDENT LIFE) Experienced Creating conversations around substance use, consent culture and sexualized violence Fun events without compromising issues of consent and social justice Extremely approachable Genuine

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT (STUDENT LIFE) Too much effort on events that appeal to a small group More effort towards homecoming, varsity games and concerts More attention to mature students or students with children Less events that promote “partying” More structure for event planning More inclusive in terms of disability, race, marginalization and students with dependents Try to create events with high attendance instead of spending money in events with low attendance ($6,000 for a DJ with 32 students)

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS Positive Satisfied with the DSU execs Positive transparency and being the students’ voice Recommendations More representation of the DSU at the law school More opportunities for students to get involved – less alienation Faster response and making ratification for pre-existing societies easier and faster

CLOSING REMARKS Do not take these comments lightly We are a public service You can never please anyone Comments/suggestions please me at
