ST9 Workshop Introduction 1 Chuck Gay/NASA Headquarters Marriott Wardman Park Washington, DC February 5-6, 2003 EW M ILLENNIUM P ROGRA NNMM Space Technology 9 (ST9) Technology Capability Needs Workshop Introduction

ST9 Workshop Introduction 2 Space Technology 9 (ST9) Workshop NASA’s New Millennium Program is chartered by the Office of Space Science and the Office of Earth Science to identify, develop and validate breakthrough technologies in space that can enable new capabilities needed for future science missions and significantly reduce the risk and cost for those missions The ST9 opportunity, sponsored by the Office of Space Science, is to validate an integrated suite of technologies that can provide a new, lower-cost system capability The Office of Space Science has identified five technology capability areas to be considered for ST9

ST9 Workshop Introduction 3 Space Technology 9 (ST9) Workshop This workshop is important in that it affords an opportunity for the space science and technology communities from NASA, industry, universities and other government agencies to guide NMP in: – Defining the requirements for the capability areas – Assessing the applicability and readiness of a range of advanced technologies that potentially can meet the requirements – Defining the attributes of a system validation experiment that demonstrates a significant step toward meeting the future mission requirements

ST9 Workshop Introduction 4 Space Technology 9 (ST9) Workshop We thank all of you for your willingness to assist NASA and hope that through discussions over the next two days that you benefit from interactions with your colleagues in both science and technology
