AIDS facts Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a disease that is spread through blood and other bodily fluids. It attacks and destroys the immune system, leaving the victim unable to fight off infections.

Of the 34,300,000 AIDS cases in the world, 24,500,000 cases are found in sub-Saharan Africa 3,800,000 are children under the age of 15 AIDS in Africa

Around 15,100,000 children orphaned by AIDS live in sub-Saharan Africa 74 % in Zimbabwe 63% in South Africa See more at: aids.htm#sthash.n6OefRG9.dpuf An 'orphan' is defined by the United Nations as a child who has 'lost one or both parents'. AIDS

Unstable African governments have worsened the AIDS pandemic AIDS cannot be cured Anti-viral drugs (which cost between $10,000 - $15,000 per year) are too expensive AIDS People living with HIV 22.5 of which are women 13.7 of which are children 2.2 People newly infected with HIV 1.7 AIDS deaths 1.6 AIDS orphans 11.4 AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa millions, 2007 Source: UN Africa Renewal from data in UNAIDS, WHO, AIDS Epidemic Update 2007

AIDS In 1985 the first case of an HIV infection was detected on the continent of Africa and governments were slow to respond. Poor healthcare systems, poverty, civil wars, and lack of government organization along with ignorance about HIV/AIDS contributed to the widespread epidemic.

AIDS A ten minute excerpt from the 25 minute film "Hope In The Time of AIDS" that outlines some of the statistics, hopes and brutal hardships of HIV and AIDS in Africa—or any country, of course, but particularly countries lacking in access and equal gender rights. ~Credit: YouTube "Hope In The Time of AIDS" Click on picture above to play video on YouTube.
