TMC Internet Telephony, San Diego Friday - 10/13/06, 8:45-9:30am Dr. Christian Stredicke interoperabilitytechnology leadershipreasonable solution VoIP Migration Strategies for SMB

The overall situation interoperabilitytechnology leadershipreasonable solution Finally the VoIP industry is splitting up into layers Operating Consulting ITSP Phones SIP PBX … Everything is provided (more or less) by one large company The Past: The Future: Specialized vendors offering top-notch products in a specific area Problem: Products are getting very complex and it is hard to stay competitive

Evolution or Revolution? Evolution sounds like a good idea -Keep the investments, existing procedures, … -No dangerous switch over However, evolution does create some problems -Operating TDM-based and IP-based infrastructure doubles cost -Complexity goes significantly up Revolution does not brake the bank any more -Prices for SIP-based PBX are down -Wide selection of good phones If you prefer evolution, better stay with your existing system Otherwise, move to IP and once it is working, put the old equipment into the trashcan

Hosted PBX or CPE? Hosted PBX +No trouble setting up and maintaining central equipment -Soft software upgrade problem -No backup +Usually combined with attractive rates +Accessible from anywhere –No backup when Internet goes down –Media delay may increase, features like BLF may be a little bit slow Customer Premises Equipment +No QoS problems, at least inside the LAN +Trunking to ITSP gives you great rates +Failover to PSTN is possible +Easy to keep your DID numbers for inbound calls (flat rate!) +Equipment becomes cheap –You have to maintain it on your own (if not remotely managed) –Difficult to make it accessible from anywhere

My personal opinion Small installations with up to 5 phones -Go with hosted services 6-25 extensions: -“All inclusive” CPE equipment with FXO backup, bundles -Possibly remote management (through VPN, tunneling) 26+ extensions: -One or two 19” server -Separate PSTN gateway (or PC card) In any case throw away old TDM or non-SIP system after migration has been finished End customers should not try to do it on their own

The new snom 300 interoperabilitytechnology leadershipreasonable solution VoIP devices don’t have to break the bank any more Excellent audio quality Same handset as 320/360 Hands free mode 3-way conference Built-in switch (but no PoE) Same software as 320/360 Includes TLS/SRTP Keys can be programmed (up to 6 lines, no additional license cost) New software release 7.0 Cost effective Available now
