1 Energy Information Administration On-line or off-the-shelf, EIA is the first place to go for the last word in energy information Who is EIA? Independent statistical/analytical agency. The leader in providing high-quality, policy-independent energy information for Government, industry and the public. Promotes sound policy making, efficient markets, and public understanding. What does EIA Do? EIA evaluates proposed energy policy options. Maintains a comprehensive energy database. Maintains the National Energy Modeling System for midterm energy markets analysis and forecasting. Maintains the Short ‑ Term Integrated Forecasting System for near ‑ term energy market analysis and forecasting. Disseminates energy data and analyses for a wide variety of customers. Conducts customer forums and surveys to maintain an up ‑ to ‑ date energy information and analytical services. Responds to inquiries for energy information and analyses.

2 Who are EIA’s customers? Public policy makers in Congress, the Administration, and DOE Federal Government Agencies, State and local governments The energy industry Educational institutions News media The public In support of the DOE’s Energy Resources Performance Goals: EIA will provide national and international energy data, analysis, information and forecasts to meet the needs of the energy decision-makers and the public in order to promote sound policymaking, efficient energy markets and public understanding. Energy Information Administration On-line or off-the-shelf, EIA is the first place to go for the last word in energy information

3 EIA’s Current Priorities & Activities The volatility in energy markets, the deregulation of energy industries, and environmental issues, are placing high demands on EIA for information and analyses. Congress is increasingly asking for EIA testimony and analyses. For example, in 2001, EIA testified at 15 hearings. Administration and Congress are asking EIA for special analyses and briefings on the energy situation, and short- and mid-term forecasts of the future. Congress has asked EIA to analyze several issues of interest (e.g., low sulfur diesel regulations, and limits on multiple-emissions from electric power plants). EIA is being asked to analyze legislative proposals in Congress. In response to the events of September 2001, EIA is producing the Energy Situation Analysis Report (ESAR) twice weekly. EIA will be operating the Weekly Natural Gas Underground Storage Survey beginning in May 2002 – survey discontinued by the American Gas Association. Energy Information Administration On-line or off-the-shelf, EIA is the first place to go for the last word in energy information

4 EIA’s Priorities & Initiatives Maintain data quality during period of high energy interest, and provide timely energy information and analyses. Redesign surveys to reflect restructured industries, demographic changes, new fuel standards, and update aging data systems (resulting from restructuring of energy markets including unbundling of services, sell-off of operating capacity to non-utilities, new and changing market participants, and retail competition). Address increased complexity in data collection due to restructured energy industries. Address known data quality issues in current surveys. 8 Energy Information Administration On-line or off-the-shelf, EIA is the first place to go for the last word in energy information EIA’s FY 2003 Plan Continue the weekly collection of Natural Gas Storage data. Continue the redesign of the natural gas and electricity surveys, and their respective processing systems. Address petroleum data quality issues related to industry mergers and consolidations, and the Clean Air Act Tier II implementation. Continue the update of 20-year old residential and commercial building energy consumption surveys based on the 2000 census, with focus on the digital economy. Continue long-term strategy for EIA’s website to serve as the primary means of energy data dissemination, improving the timely release of information.
