ISTEP Testing

ISTEP Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress Plus ISTEP +

The purpose of the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress Plus (ISTEP+) program is to measure student achievement in the subject areas of English/Language Arts and Mathematics In particular, ISTEP+ reports student achievement levels according to the Indiana Academic Standards that were adopted by the Indiana State Board of Education. An Applied Skills open-ended Assessment (Part 1) and a Multiple-Choice and Technology-Enhanced item Assessment (Part 2), which are required components of the ISTEP+ program, are used to measure these standards. What is the purpose of ISTEP+ ?

What concepts are tested on ISTEP+? Document can be viewed at

When is ISTEP+? Applied Skills Test is administered February 29 - March 11 Multiple Choice Test is administered April 18 - May 6

Applied Skills Test Open-ended questions in reading, writing, and math

Applied Skills Item Types Constructed-Response (CR) All ELA constructed-response items will be passage-based Extended-Response (ER) ERs include a stand-alone prompt preceded by a small stimulus that will act as a springboard for student writing Writing Prompt (WP) Like the ER, the writing prompt is followed by a planning page (for prewriting) and lined pages for the student’s final draft

Applied Skills Test Math The Applied Skills Assessment contains constructed-response and extended- response items which assess Problem Solving in the areas of Number Sense, Computation, Geometry, and Measurement

Require students to show their work. It is critical for students to show their work when responding to these questions as full credit will NOT be awarded if no work is shown. Both CR and ER items may require students to provide an explanation or justification within the item. Both item types require a high level of thinking. Applied Skills Math Questions

Parents As Partners

How Can You Help Your Child? 1.Be informed. Read your classroom and school newsletter. Check out your teacher’s webpage for information, newsletters, resources, and upcoming events.

2.Be proactive. Check agenda/assignment book everyday. Register and use Ed Ease to keep track of grades and missing work. Information about Ed Ease – Check out the Ed Ease tab. Call or teacher with questions or concerns. Parent conferences can be arranged as well. Please note that due to faculty, team, and committee meetings, it is best to plan ahead if you need a certain day or time to meet. Our plan periods are 2:25-3:05.

3.Be prepared. Periodically check that your child has all the classroom supplies he/she may need such as pencils, dry erase markers, and paper. Set aside time to do homework. Look ahead to prepare for upcoming tests. Make sure homework and books are returned to school each day.

4.At home practice. Typing practice-Students have accounts on typing.com. Students are already familiar with this resource and most likely have passwords memorized! Ask homeroom teachers if you need login information. SRA’s-be sure to look for these skill builders to come home. This targeted practice is on your child’s reading level and the skills are similar to tasks on our assessments. Sites-Front Row, Book Adventure, Sum Dog
