From A to Tweet… How to turn Web 2.0 into Classroom 2.0

Important Concepts Engaging today’s students means tapping into what is important to them. Do not use technology for technology sake – does it improve learning ? We have a responsibility to prepare them for their future not our past!

Technology allows learners to get their information WHEN they want it HOW they want it WHEREVER they want it

Important Concepts Educators do not have to know how to use any of the technology they assign to students They just need to know what the technology can produce and how long it will take to complete the finished project

Important Concepts A great way to learn a technology or new skill is on-line videos

Student Reactions to Web 2.0 Tools I like moving around this is a way to meet other students in the class I enjoy using my hands I get tired of writing all the time so podcasting is a fun change I work harder on these assignments because all my friends in the class will see them I enjoy creating assignments that look professional I like having the opportunity of showing my work to a wider audience

What do you do if..... Jason arrives to school with his World Issues essay on a USB key. He tries to open it at school but is unable to because his word processor at home is incompatible with the school's word processor. His essay is due in 20 minutes and Jason can't get home... WHAT DO YOU DO?

What do you do if..... Maria creates a presentation for her class on a Macintosh computer at home. Unfortunately all the computers at the school are PCs and she is unable to show her presentation. WHAT DO YOU DO?

What do you do if..... You have assigned a group presentation in your class. In one group, three students have part-time jobs, two students are on the lacrosse team and one student is trying to earn community service hours. They are unable to get together after school to work on the group project due to their incompatible calendars. WHAT DO YOU DO?

What do you do if..... You are teaching a History course and the final June essays are due. One of your students comes to you and says that his computer crashed and he lost all his work. He's not sure when he will be able to submit the paper. WHAT DO YOU DO?

What do you do if..... You have asked your Science class to do their class presentations using Power Point. Three students in your class tell you they are unable to do this assignment because they do not have this program on their home computers and there is a limited number of school computers with Power Point due to the licensing fees? WHAT DO YOU DO?
