Mrs. Pieczynski

Imagine you are living in Staffordshire, London, digging up a section of your back yard to plant a garden and your shovel strikes something metallic…

In July 2009, Terry Herbert, a metal detector enthusiast decided to try his luck in farmland close to his home in Hammerwich parish, near Lichfield in Staffordshire. The Staffordshire Hoard is the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork ever found, anywhere in the world!

This web quest will examine life during the Anglo- Saxon times ( )in order to give you a better understanding of the culture and history before reading the literature.

Select one of the artifacts from the Staffordshire Hoard to begin your journey. Click the picture (on this PowerPoint) to find out more about this object. Your picture will also lead you to a TOPIC to present. *** Each student will present at least 3 slides about this subtopic. One slide can be the ARTIFACT The remaining slideswill cover the cultural TOPIC points. (2 points minimum)

30 points( 3 slides) 10 points (5 X 5 and a picture on each slide) 10 points (Explain your slide, don’t read from it…) Works Cited Slide ONLY if you use information not linked from my power point.

By the end of your journey, you should have a better understanding of the culture of the Anglo-Saxons, who lived more than 1000 years ago. As we study works of literature like the Anglo-Saxon riddles, The Seafarer, and Beowulf, be sure to identify the cultural and historical values you have learned in this activity.
