ALGEBRA READINESS LESSON 4-4 Warm Up Lesson 4-4 Warm Up A surprising feature of the planet __ __ __ __ __ __ __ is its high rotational speed. It completes one revolution in 9 hours, 55 minutes making for a very short day!

ALGEBRA READINESS “Equivalent Forms of Rational Numbers” (4-4) (4-3) What is a “rational number”? How do you write a decimal in its fraction form? Rational Number: a number that can be written as a fraction with a nonzero denominator – This includes all integers, all terminating decimals (decimals that have a stopping point), and all repeating decimals (decimals the repeat the same order of number forever) Examples: …. You can write a decimal in its fraction form by writing the fraction exactly the way you would read the decimal. Then, simplify the fraction if possible. Example:Write in fraction form. In words, you would read as “three hundred forty-five thousandths”. This means the bottom number of the fraction is 1000: = Write the fraction that reads “three hundred forty- five thousandths” =Divide the numerator and denominator by GCD =Simplify _  

ALGEBRA READINESS Write as a fraction in simplest form =Write “two hundred twenty-five thousandths” as a fraction ,000 Divide the numerator and the denominator by the GCD, 25. = 225 ÷ 25 1,000 ÷ 25 Simplify = 9 40 Equivalent Forms of Rational Numbers LESSON 4-4 Additional Examples

ALGEBRA READINESS “Equivalent Forms of Rational Numbers” (4-4) (4-3) What is a “terminating decimal”? What is a “repeating decimal”? How do you write a fraction as a decimal? Terminating Decimal: a decimal that terminates, or stops, at some point Examples: Repeating Decimal: a decimal that repeats the same pattern of digits forever (the repeated digits are written once with a line over them to show they are repeated) Examples: Since a fraction bar, indicates division, you can write a fraction in its decimal form by dividing the numerator (top) by the denominator (bottom). Since a fraction is a rational number, the result will be either a terminating or repeating decimal. Examples: In baseball, a player’s batting average equals. A batting average is written as a decimal rounded to three places and is written without the leading 0. Find the batting average of a hitter with 36 hits and 125 at bats. Divide the numerator by the denominator. If there is no decimal in the numerator, add one to the end. Then, move the decimal straight up. If you can’t divide into a number, add a 0 to it. Continue to add 0’s until the decimal ends (a remainder of 0) or repeats (you notice an ongoing pattern in the order of digits after the decimal) number of hits ____ number of times at bat The players batting average is.288.

ALGEBRA READINESS Write each batting average as a decimal. a. Joe made 4 hits in 20 times at bat. Joe’s batting average was.200. Write the batting average as a fraction Divide 4 by 20. This is a terminating decimal ) 4.0 –4.0 0 Equivalent Forms of Rational Numbers LESSON 4-4 Additional Examples

ALGEBRA READINESS b. Pat made 6 hits in 33 times at bat. Pat’s batting average was about.182. Write the batting average as a fraction Divide 6 by 33. This is a repeating decimal ) – – – –264 6 (continued) Equivalent Forms of Rational Numbers LESSON 4-4 Additional Examples

ALGEBRA READINESS Write as a decimal. Write each decimal as a mixed number or fraction in simplest form Equivalent Forms of Rational Numbers LESSON 4-4 Lesson Quiz
