CENIC/NLR Optical Network Management Winter 2006 Joint Techs Workshop February 7, 2006 Chris Costa CENIC

Agenda Provide overview of CENIC and NLR Optical Infrastructures Define the tools and procedures CENIC uses to monitor these networks Identify some challenges supporting these large optical networks

CENIC Corporation for Educational Network Initiatives in California Advanced optical network infrastructure servicing California’s colleges, research institutions and K-12 schools Multi-tiered services across a common backbone Cisco 15808/15454 Hybrid Long Haul platforms supporting up to 80 channels Cisco 15540/15454 Metro platforms supporting up to 32 channels

CENIC Optical Backbone

Management Platforms Craft Interfaces for individual Network Element provisioning and troubleshooting –CTC - Cisco Transport Controller provisioning/troubleshooting –CWD - Cisco Wavelength Director provisioning/troubleshooting CTM - Cisco Transport Manager –GUI based NMS provides overview of multiple spans in the network. Inventory Management Fault Management Performance Management Configuration Management

Test Equipment OSA - Optical Spectrum Analyzer

Performance Monitoring PM Reports –trend analysis –Continuous, 15 min, 1 hr reports Forward Error Correction - FEC –Validates client’s payload over the DWDM transport

Commissioning Data Reports Run prior to and after maintenances or service interruptions –Provides detailed analysis of optical parameters

Optical Networking Challenges NE monitoring during fiber cuts –Complex routed solutions Hybrid Management systems –Utilize CTM and CTC/CWD to provision and troubleshoot NMS Upgrades to support new hardware Documentation –Keeping provisioning data up to date Deploying test equipment Configuration History –Audit Trail Alarm correlation
