Chemical Properties Chemical Property – something that leads to a change in composition of matter.
Reviewing MATTER Matter: anything that has mass and volume
FIRST LET’S REVIEW : Physical and Chemical Changes Physical Change Chemical Change O Doesn’t create a new substance O Changes the form or shape O Phase.

2/24/12 OBJECTIVE: Students will identify physical and chemical properties. WARM-UP: Identify 5 common elements. HOMEWORK: None.
Mass, color, volume, and weight are examples of physical properties. A physical property can be observed or measured without changing the substance. Example:
Chemical Properties and Changes. Property = a characteristic that gives a substance identity Properties of Vinegar: - clear liquid - density is 1.08 g/mL.

Physical vs. Chemical Changes Intro to Chemical Reactions

First, Review Properties Physical Properties Tell us what something looks, smells, feels like Chemical Properties Tell us the way a substance reacts with another substance

Physical Properties Chemical Properties hard soft rough orange yellow malleable solid liquid gas etc.... rusts flammable etc....

Physical Changes Chemical Changes Melting freezing vaporizing tearing breaking etc... rusting burning etc.... The chemical formula of the substance doesn’t change! The chemical formula of the substance changes! NEW substances are formed!

Example- Wood Burning Wood: hard brown flammabl e solid Smoke: grey/blac k non- flammabl e gas Ash: grey non- flammabl e solid

Distribute “10 Signs of a Chemical Change”

Let’s Test Ourselves Melting Ice Tearing Paper Burning Paper Water and baking soda Vinegar and baking soda Rusting Popping a ballon The demise of the Hindenburg burning candle melting wax
