The Nature Of Water By Mary Dann. Physical Properties of Water Water is necessary for life and is the most abundant component of living things Most marine.
Water is the most abundant inorganic compound in the human body – 66%! It is the transport/exchange medium in organisms (e.g. plasma, cytoplasm)
Oxygen part has a slightly negative charge and the hydrogen parts a slightly positive charge – Water molecules “stick” to one another by a hydrogen bond.

* Review: What are the properties of water? * Water is adhesive: It has the ability to stick onto things. This allows for capillary action- water’s ability to travel up small tubes.

* Water is cohesive: It has the ability to stick to itself. This creates surface tension- which causes water to form droplets and allows insects and leaves to rest on the surface of a body of water.

* Water is the universal solvent * This is because many substances dissolve in it. * Homogeneous mixtures: mixture has a uniform composition throughout. A solution is another word for homogeneous mixture. * Heterogeneous mixtures: mixture where the components remain distinct

* Water has a very high specific heat capacity- the amount of heat per unit mass required to raise its temperature by one degree Celsius. * It also has a high heat of vaporization- it can take a lot of heat without its temperature rising much. * Water’s hydrogen bonds allow its solid form (ice) to float on its liquid form. Ice is less dense than liquid water.

* Take out your water lab handout and begin with part 1. Set up Part 1. * You will need to complete parts 2 and 3 while you monitor part 1.

* Take out your Water Lab Handout. * Complete parts 4, 6, and 7 * HW: Read and complete activities 8 and 9
