Citizen leadership Friday 11 September 2015 Jess Alexander, Scottish Social Services Council

Leadership strategy for social services in Scotland Our vision is for a social services workforce that understands and uses its leadership capability to make sure that the people it supports are at the centre of service design and delivery and are supported to achieve their personal outcomes.

Citizen Leadership “Citizen Leadership is an activity… it happens when citizens have power and influence and responsibility to make decisions. Citizen Leadership happens when individuals have some control over their own services. It also happens when citizens take action for the benefit of other citizens.” Principles and Standards of Citizen Leadership Changing Lives User and Carer Forum, 2008

What’s important if we want to develop citizen leadership? Building good relationships Taking time to understand each other Establishing trust Focussing on the power of meaningful conversations Recognising what leadership skills you have already and those you want or need to develop Knowing what or who will help you to develop those skills!

Time to reflect What do you think about all of this? What leadership skill would you most like to develop, and why? What or who could help you with this? Would you like to be involved in the review of the leadership strategy for Scotland’s social services? If so, how?
