The Law of Sowing and Reaping
2 Corinthians 9:5-15
World's Dirtiest Man
Ten Reasons People Don't Wash 1. I was forced to wash as a child 2. People who wash are hypocrites – they think they’re cleaner than others 3. There are so many kinds of soap, I could never decide which to use 4. I used to wash, but it got boring 5. I wash only on special occasions like Christmas or Easter
Ten Reasons People Don't Wash 6. None of my friends wash 7. I’ll start washing when I’m older 8. I really don’t have time 9. The bathroom is too cold --(Or too hot) 10. People who make soap are only after your money
Why Teach About Giving? 1. “Declaring to you the whole counsel of God.” (Acts 20:27) 2. Jesus talked about stewardship more than any other subject
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt 6:21)
“Jesus Christ said more about money than about any other single thing because, when it comes to a [person's] real nature, money is of first importance. Money is an exact index to a [person's] true character. All through Scripture there is an intimate correlation between the development of a [person's] character and how [they] handle [their] money.” Richard Halverson, Former Chaplain, US Senate
2 Kinds of Giving How NOT to give... –Vs. 5 - Don't give grudgingly –Vs. 6 - Don't give sparingly –Vs. 7 - Don't give reluctantly
Right Way to Give... – Vs. 5 - Willingly – Vs. 6 - Bountifully – Vs. 7 - Cheerfully
What is wrong with these? –Vs. 5 - Giving grudgingly? –Vs. 6 - Giving sparingly? –Vs. 7 - Giving reluctantly? – –They stem from a desire to hold back
Example Ananias and Sapphira in Acts, Chapter 5 They wanted to receive recognition for being generous, but their hearts were actually selfish.
Why should the Corinthian Christians give generously, bountifully, willingly, and cheerfully? Paul gave 2 reasons: –The size of a harvest corresponds to the scope of the sowing –We give generously because God loves generosity
What makes the difference between a reluctant giver and a bountiful giver? A person's relationship with God!
“Love is simply vertical grace bent outward toward other people.” Dr. John Piper
