WHAT IS HEALTH?

Health is… A combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. Think of your health as a triangle with equal sides.

Physical Health is… The condition of your body Keeping fit by regular exercise Eat a balanced diet Maintain ideal weight Practice good grooming habits Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and drugs Get plenty of rest (8-9 hours)

Mental/emotional is… Relates to thoughts and feelings Develop thinking and decision making skills Strive to learn new information Learn how to deal with life's problems Learn ways to deal with stress

Social health is… Ways in which you relate to others. Get along with family and friends Make and keep friends Work well in groups Disagree without fighting and show respect for others Give and get support when needed

Measuring your health You can’t judge how healthy you are by looking in the mirror. Having an honest self - assessment or examination and judgment of your own patterns of behavior will help you judge your current health status. It may reveal areas of health you can improve.

What is Wellness? Keeping the three parts of your triangle in balance is the best way to achieve wellness. Wellness is a state of well- being or balanced health. By making good decisions and practicing healthful decisions each day, you will be able to achieve a high level of wellness.

Physical health CHECK 1. I get a least 8 hours or sleep each night. 2. I eat a well balanced diet including a healthful breakfast each day. 3. I keep my body, teeth, and hair clean. 4. I do at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity each day. 5. I avoid using or being around drugs, alcohol, other drugs. 6. I see a doctor and dentist regularly.

Mental/ Emotional Health 1. I generally feel good about myself and accept who I am. 2. I express my feelings clearly and calmly, even when I am angry or sad. 3. I accept helpful criticism. 4. I have at least one activity I enjoy doing. 5. I feel that people like and accept me. 6. I like to learn new information and develop new skills.

Social Health 1. I have at least one close friend. 2. I respect and care for my family and friends. 3. I know how to disagree with someone without getting angry. 4. I am a good listener. 5. I get support from others when I need it. 6. I say no if people as me to do something harmful or wrong.

 For each part of your triangle add up your “yes” and “no” answers and see if you have a balanced triangle.  Is there one area where you answered no to many questions?  How can you improve your health triangle?
