Academic Argument By Katelynn Marshall

 Diet Soda affects the Dopaminergic midbrain and right amygdala causing the brain to crave more sugar.  Diet Soda creates a sweet tooth which is linked to obesity throughout America.

 Each sugared drink consumed by children increase their obesity and BMI  Most children have limited their physical activity to only one hour a day  If something doesn’t change these habits of diet soda will continue throughout further generations

 Doctors have suggested that Americans replace diet soda and regular soda with water, coffee, and tea.  Many Americans drink soda for the caffeine but there are other ways to get energy that are not linked with obesity.

 Most Americans with eating disorders such as Anorexia and Bulimia are woman.  Woman drink more diet soda than men  Since Diet Soda creates a want for sugar, Americans with eating disorders suffer more than if they didn’t drink Diet Soda. It is making their condition even more difficult.

 Americans with eating disorders believe that drinking a diet soda can be a meal replacement.  By replacing meal with soda is making people with an eating disorder feel worse about themselves because they crave the sugar they can’t have even more.  This has led to depression and increase of the problem of eating disorders.

 Doctors have recommended that people with eating disorders focus on trying to cut diet soda and regular soda out of their diet entirely.  Americans with eating disorders should focus on having a balanced diet instead of drinking empty calories.

 Women tend to drink more diet soda than men.  Women drink diet soda because they are trying to improve their body image, not necessarily to be healthy.  Men typically are trying to bulk up and drink and eat foods that will help with muscle not fat.

 Women are more likely than men to change their eating habits for health considerations and achieve weight loss or maintenance goals  Teenagers drink more soda than any other age group because they are influenced by both the home and school environment  The home is the main influence on whether or not a teen drinks soda.  Just like adults, teenage girls drink more diet soda than teenage boys do.

 Diet and regular sodas do equal damage to teeth; in this aspect regular soda is no better than diet soda because both eat away at tooth enamel because of the acids they contain  The sugar in diet soda is not what eats away at tooth enamel, it's the acids (used as flavoring agents)

 If you continually sip on soda throughout your day it allows the acids to sit and slowly decay your teeth  Studies have shown that if you drink soda while you are also eating food it helps balance out the acids and the soda doesn’t eat away at your teeth as much  Studies have also shown that brushing and flossing continually throughout your day can help prevent tooth decay

 Diet soda has worsened the problem of obesity by adding a sugar craving to the diets of Americans.  People who replace meals with diet soda because of eating disorders only worsen the disorder by making it harder on themselves. It also creates more health issues because of a lack of good food.  Woman tend to drink more diet soda to improve body image but what they don’t know is the diet soda is making them crave the foods they are trying to avoid.  The acidity in diet soda causes tooth decay and hurts the enamel on teeth. So when people replace food with diet soda they are letting the diet soda eat away at their teeth.
