LE1-C4S1T1-Instructor Guide - Introduction to Career Preparation – The Portfolio

Purpose The purpose of this lesson is to give you an opportunity to begin career preparation for your future.

1. Describe a portfolio. 2. Explain why creating and maintaining a career portfolio is important. 3. Identify portfolio items. 4. Create a personalized career portfolio.

CPS Lesson Questions (1-2)

Have you ever written a resume for a job? A.Yes B.No

True or False: The better you prepare the less likely your chances are of achieving success and doing something that you enjoy. A.True B.False

Think about how you would create your personal career portfolio. List 2-3 things you might include in your portfolio. (Use CPS “Pick a Student” for this question)

 What do you want to become?  What do you need to prepare?  These questions and many more like them are what you must try to answer in order to prepare for your future.

 A portfolio is a file that contains an organized collection of student work based on personality, goals, and aspirations.  It provides insight and information on a student’s personal self and a student’s achievements and/or growth over time.

 A portfolio is tailored to meet your needs and requirements.  It is also designed with colleges, potential scholarships, and future employers in mind.  It can also serve as evidence of your accomplishments.

When creating your career portfolio, include the areas of: 1. Self knowledge/self analysis 2. Your life roles 3. Past, present, and future educational development 4. Career exploration and planning

Basic requirements common to all portfolios are: 1. A personal cover page 2. A table of contents 3. A personal statement 4. A resume 5. Letters of reference – as many as possible 6. Transcripts (optional)

 A portfolio is not complete until you evaluate it thoroughly.  Some questions you should ask yourself to ensure you have developed a quality product are: 1. Are the required documents included? 2. Have you edited it to make sure there are no errors? 3. Is it neat and organized? 4. Is it pleasing to the eye?
