P4 and P4/5 Jacobite Activity

Can you guess what we’re doing today? Clue 1: Jacobite, not Hanoverian Clue 2: Rose, not thistle Clue 3: White, not red. Clue 4: And the answer is…… The White Cockade

What next? With your partner, discuss what you know already about the white cockade.

Why the White Cockade? The word cockade means badge. Bonnie Prince Charlie was supposed to have picked a white rose from a bush, when he first arrived in Scotland and pinned it to his blue bonnet. Other Jacobites did the same and it then became the emblem for all supporters of the Jacobites. It became easier to pin ribbon to their bonnets instead of Roses. Can you think Why?

Why the White Cockade (continued)… It wasn’t just Jacobite men that wore them!

What are we going to do today? Make our own white cockades. You will need: 1.17 strips of white paper each (do not lose any). 2.A cardboard square. 3.Glue.

1. Glue the edges of four strips of paper on to the four edges of the cardboard square.

2. Now bring the outer edge of each strip of paper into the centre. Glue down the edges in line with the inner edges that you have already glued.

3. Now repeat steps 1 and 2, but this time glue the strips across the corners of the cardboard square.

4. To make a double cockade, repeat steps 1-3 on top of the rosette you have already made.

5. Now take the last strip of paper and glue it together to make a ring. 6. Glue the ring, seam facing down, on to the centre of the cockade, covering the centre of the cardboard square.

Your cockade is now ready to be worn!
