Andrew Jackson Part I
Election of 1824 – all four candidates were Democrat-Republicans. John Quincy Adams – (Dem-Rep) 6 th President of the U.S., elected in 1824, served one term.
Election of 1828 – John Q. Adams vs. Andrew Jackson. Jackson wins. The Democrat Party – started by Jackson to oppose John Q. Adams and his Democrat-Republicans followers.
Suffrage – the right to vote. (Jackson supported laws allowing suffrage for all white men in America.) Spoils System – replacing government employees with the winning candidate’s supporters. (Jackson was the first to use this so completely).
Nullification Crisis – South Carolina opposed a high tariff passed in Congress by refusing to pay. Congress passed a law saying the President could use the military to enforce the law. South Carolina backed down.
