2 What the heck is the stuff? Why do we need it? How do I know what to use?

3 Sand paper is a combination of 3 items? A backing material - cloth or paper An adhesive - Glue or epoxy An abrasive material - natural or manmade

4 Sandpaper is some type of abrasive mounted on a piece of paper or cloth. It is measured in what is called grit

5 What is Grit? Grit is the way sandpaper is measured. To determine grit it is measure buy the number of pieces in 1 square inch on the paper. It is applied in 2 ways Gravity feed Electrostaticly

6 Ranges of Grit The coarsest paper manufactured is 16 Grit it looks like Rocks on paper Who would use it? The finest paper manufactured is: 2000 grit This is hard to find paper, it feels like notebook paper Who would use it?

8 Grits in woodworking In woodworking the grits usually range from 60 to 220. We will use 4 different grits in our class 60 - Coarse 80 - Medium Fine 220 – Extra Fine

9 There are 4 main types sandpaper made Garnet - Used in cabinet making, Natural Material, but Not a durable product Aluminum Oxide - Used in cabinet making, it is a Manufactured product and is a very durable product

10 Emery - Used in metal working with a cloth backing. It is very durable and can get wet. Silicon Carbide Used in auto body work. It is known as Wet dry paper. It has a plastic coating so it can get wet

11 What will we be using in our classes? We will be using Aluminum Oxide paper. It is a brown color. The darker the color, the coarser the grit.

12 How do we sand? The only important thing to remember about sanding in one thing, the direction.
